QHY8 support was created by Fabio Papa

Hi all,
I recently installed lubuntu and kstars-bleeding plus indi on a friend notebook.
He has a QHY8 and it doesn't appear on the supported QHY cameras. I've seen some topics floating around on this and other forums but they never get to a conclusion.
Is this camera supported? I seem to understand there's many version of it around, so if it doesn't get recognized, can I do something to help getting it to work?

Thanks!

First you have to make sure where it is QHY8 or QHY8L, and then find out the VID:PID of the camera to see if it already in the udev rules file or not.

It is a qhy8, of that I'm certain. I can find the values, but where should I put them if it isn't recognized?

Thanks!

Hi Jasem,
the camera is already present into the rule file. As far as I can tell from dmesg, it does get recognized. Here the excerpt:

[ 51.608078] usb 1-8: new high-speed USB device number 7 using ehci-pci
[ 51.757182] usb 1-8: New USB device found, idVendor=1618, idProduct=6000
[ 51.757185] usb 1-8: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0
[ 51.944668] usb 1-8: USB disconnect, device number 7
[ 53.720075] usb 1-8: new high-speed USB device number 8 using ehci-pci
[ 53.870218] usb 1-8: config 1 interface 0 altsetting 0 bulk endpoint 0x1 has invalid maxpacket 64
[ 53.873216] usb 1-8: New USB device found, idVendor=16c0, idProduct=2972
[ 53.873219] usb 1-8: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
[ 53.873221] usb 1-8: Product: QHY-8 V10
[ 53.873224] usb 1-8: Manufacturer: QHYCams

Still, ekos will not connect to the camera. What else can I check?

Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm not there anymore, but since you always ask for that, I did launch that. I don't have the precise text, but it was something like asking for a property and nothing else..

Ok, a piece of good news : my friend got it to work. But the way he found is a little inconvenient. He has to load up windows first, let it recognize the camera, reboot in Linux, and then it works.
What could it be, and do you think we can do something to help you solve this?

Thanks!

Does it work now in Linux even if you reboot again? If you have to use Windows every time then it looks like it's related to loading of the firmware. Maybe the udev rule for this QHY is not kicking in for some reason in Linux? Your guess is as good as mine.

I'd be very surprised if the udev rules had some issues. After all, this is a brand new lubuntu 16.04.2 install with your PPA added.
I'm more inclined to think this camera needs some sort of different firmware loaded. This camera is branded Magzero and it's model is MZ-8. It's obviously a rebranded QHY8, but it might be just that little bit different to cause problems. If you look at Craig Stark's Nebulosity changelog, he needed to add it to its supported cameras during development, when vanilla QHY8 support was already working. That gets me to think this camera is just a bit different.
This weekend I'll get another chance to work at it. I'll take any log you can think of, Jasem. So if you have more suggestions at what to take home with me, I'll do it. I intend to take dmesg outputs from both working and non-working situations, as well as indiserver -vvv outputs in both occasions.
One final question: where does the qhy8.hex file come from? Is it possible to obtain it from the windows driver in any way? I could try taking it from the working windows installation and see how that goes.

Thanks again for all your time and effort, it's highly appreciated!

Yes you can try the firmware from Windows, and if it works, we can add it to INDI for your camera model specifically. However, you might end up breaking the camera by using different firmware, you never know. So do this at your own risk :D
