When running Ekos on the RPI3 using Ubuntu-mate 16.04, what settings need to be changed to give the nice dark palettes.

Attached is what happens when the Night Vision palette is set.

Now attached

hi Maudy, I also run INDI on RPI3 using ubuntu mate but have Ekos on my laptop (Mint / Ubuntu). In other words on the RPI3 there' s the server not the client. Do you see any benefit in running the Ekos client on RPI3?

Neveretheless, I agree that Kstars/Ekos (with or without night vision palette) doesn' t look good on Gnome base DE eg Mint / Ubuntu / Mate. Using Mint Y Dark Theme with Oxygen icon set gets things little better but buttons contrast is too low, see top bar on kstars image.
Here attached kstars in Night Vision and Moonless night on my Mint (Mint Y dark + Oxygen).

Yes I use Kstars/Ekos/INDIServer all on RPI3.

Other than Platesolving, which at times I will switch to may mac to do if it takes more than three attempts, Ekos on RPI3 runs my image session all night. The image sessions are not complex, only involved two meridian flips (one worked and one did not), and are typically a single target in LRGB or SII Ha OII.

Currently I am using the Astroberry server image by Kaczorek. It seems perfect for the RPI3, whether at home or in the field. The Access point was perfect, controlling the session via an iPad and VNC.

I use LUbuntu in part because I found the way Ubuntu Mate handles these colours to be undesirable as was illustrated.

Does LUbuntu support RPI3?

A quick search suggested it was only for AMD and INTEL; too bad if so.

Interesting! Ok, I will look into this a bit. I also need to look at making another Raspian SD Card to test my camera for ZWO. I will likely stick with Ubuntu-mate and the Astroberry image though unless there is some other compelling reason to switch.
