image size does not match capture from camera

I had the same problem with pk-thether... My flats were captured by triggering the camera directly and downloading the images from the camera to my laptop. The lights however were captured remotely during an imaging session. In this case, using Ekos. But when I try to preprocess the Ekos lights with the camera flats, the size does not match and the pre-processing software, Nebulosity fails.

How do I match the Ekos captured image size to the camera direct image size?

(Nebulosity reports the light is 16552800 whereas the flat is 16255800)

If you using DSLR camera, then you must use the same method. i.e. All must be FITS or All must be CR2.

The reason is that GPhoto/libraw produce different sizes. This is why you have this popup dialog asking you the dimensions of your DSLR. It is required because it would subframe whatever produced by GPhoto to be in that size.

So:

1. Your flats are CR2 or FITS?
2. What's the dimensions you entered for your camera?
3. What are the dimension for the different sizes?

all files are DNG
dimensions reported (by say Lightroom and other photo software) is 4928 x 3264 = 16084992 which doesn't match Nebulosity's report of 16255800
I tried 4950 x 3284, and 4928 x 3264 in Ekos but always got 16552800 (as reported by Nebulosity). I was unable to get a size of 16255800 .

I think the "4928 x 3264" comes from metadata.
I get 4950 x 3284 = 16255800 for the flats from camera
I get 4950 x 3344 = 16552800 for the lights from Ekos

So should I be able to control the DNG file size from Ekos? I'll try again. Maybe missed something

DNGs are like CR2, INDI cannot change or control the size of native files. It looks like some issue with overscan handling in libraw vs. the camera leading to different pixel dimensions. If you specify FITS, can you customize the size?

Thanks for the help Jasem. I can't test for now because my camera is being modified, and I'm not really keen on using fits because the file is much bigger and it adds a lot more time to get the image to the client.

I see there is a dark band at the bottom of the Ekos image that doesn't look like valid image data - I think this is a dark reference part of the sensor. I suppose this data could be nice to have for some applications. Maybe I can find a way to batch crop the lights (DNGs) before processing.

EDIT: Yes, I found that nebulosity will batch crop so I think this is a solution - I'll try the fits format next time when I get my camera back.

EDIT EDIT: maybe I'll just collect flats with Ekos as you mentioned. it'll make things simpler overall

I also having the same issue.

But one more question, how do you manage to shoot Flat in Bulb Mode? if the exposure is 1/40s (0.025s), how? Bulb mode is not design to take such a shutter speed.

Any idea?

Thanks.

If you use a DSLR then you need to use larger exposure times for your flats, like 1 sec or so. Otherwise the mirror flips up and down during the major part of the exposure leading to "unflat" flats which will harm the image processing. See for instance this link . I use a flat panel which is too bright for my setup so I take a white t-shirt and fold it 2 times so I can use 2 second exposure to create my flats. Works like a charm, even in bulb mode.

Good idea. Actually I only need it on my L-Pro filter. For Ha 7nm, it takes 5sec for a flat.

I see a lot of people getting complicated about calibration frames. When in doubt, I take my direction from Stark Labs. This guy wrote PHD2 and Nebulosity and has a no-nonsense approach to AP. The flats are taken with a quick exposure. The goal is to get the correct for the optical train irregularities. The best way to keep the camera out of the equation here is to get a nice clean low noise output so use low ISO and as fast a shutter if possible. I just do a burst.

Here is the quote from Stark Labs:

"take 10-20 frames by evenly illuminating the field. Some do this by putting a glowing “ flat panel” on the front of the scope, others aim at a wall, and others aim at the early morning sky the next morning (perhaps putting a t-shirt over the scope). Whatever you do, make it even and then expose for a very short duration so that the histogram shows all of your values are well off the left and right side".

Note here also that it doesn't even have to be that white as long as you have the red, green and blue histograms well define.

Now back to the image size question. How to get flat and bias captured from DSLR directly match with Light frames that captured using EKOS?

FITS from EKOS will give the image size of 4928x3264
DNG from DSLR will give the image size of 4950x3284
DNG from EKOS will give image size of 4950x3344

Old post, but did anyone find a solution to why EKOS/INDI creates images with wrong dimensions, and how to correct it?
All images taken with EKOS have dimensions 4950x3344, be it .fits or native .pef
Images taken with camera have dimensions 4950x3284.
