Ekos without KDE possible?

Hi All,

Since this is my first post here I would start with a great “thank you” to the developper(s) of Indi and Ekos. You are doing a really great job and after many years I finally can and will leave the windows platform for astrophotograpy.

At the moment I'm running Kubuntu 15.04 (x86), INDI 1.1.0 and Kstars 2.3.0.
I had (or have) issues with KDE in combination of the NVIDIA graphics adaptor. Crashes of Ekos are still present and therefore I would like to know if KDE is really a requirement for running Ekos.

Can anyone clarify if it is possible to run Ekos without the (buggy) KDE interface?

Thanks in advance,

You can run KStars under any desktop environment, but installing KStars will install most of KDE libraries required for KStars to work regardless of whatever desktop environment you are running. If the crashes are in Ekos itself, then running Ekos under a different desktop envrionment will not resolve this problem. So it would be better to report the crashes so I can investigate them and check if it related to Ekos or something else.

Thanks.
I started with Ubuntu Mate (gnome2 desktop) and at first everything seems to work fine but later I've seen some dialog screens where incomplete so therefore I was wandering if this config is supported.

The crashes of Ekos are indeed most probably caused by an underlying framework or library. I will do some more testing and try to describe a reproducible situation.

Thanks again and kind regards,

After some testing I can conclude that there is no direct connection to Ekos in regard of the GUI issues.
Kstars depends (too) heavily on KDE and in my opinion there is no way to flawlessly use it on a non KDE desktop.
So I have to live with and get used to KDE5. Might take some time....

I'm using Kubuntu backports to get the latest KDE plasma since the one shipped with 15.04 is quite buggy.

If you feel adventurous, you can try this:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

But there is a chance it could break your system, so it is up to you :-)

The update went fine and I can still login :)

Still some odd issues with message screens. When e.q. on startup of kstars the below horizon message appears, only the frame of the dialog screen without any content is visible which essentially hangs kstars. Terminating the dialog (only option) will kill kstars. The only option to start kstars is to wait until the next day hoping the view is above the horizon.
I know this is off-topic but still want to give some feedback

Might be an issue with gstreamer, try this:
sudo apt-get remove phonon4qt5-backend-gstreamer
sudo apt-get install phonon4qt5-backend-vlc
sudo /usr/lib/vlc/vlc-cache-gen -f /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/
