So, I began to make the open project "Ubuntu Astronomy" (it is based on Ubuntu 16.04).
It contains many astronomical programs from my list .

You can see its screen Ubuntu Astronomy v.1.3

What are your suggestions?

Hello Oleg,

Is it possible to avoid unity desktop by default ?
It is not really handy.
(In my opinion unity is the worst desktop interface that Canonical has ever delivered with ubuntu)

Mate seems to be a good candidate, it is lightweight and easy to use, more intuitive than unity I guess. But if you have any other idea....

I can't create a good *.iso image from my project :(
I use the Pinguy Builder for this operation, but its image doesn't work correctly after installation: its boot loader has defect - installed "Ubuntu Astronomy" distributive can't load :(

Hi :)
Thanks for your job, it's quite impressive ! It reminds me some good time :
I am one of the first "Astronomy DVD maker" (lin4astro www.linux-live-cd.org/?Lin4astro 2005...pfff...11 years... based on a Knoppix live DVD).

And... one of our thinking is a DVD was too large, too big to be used. Now, with modern transfert rate, it's not an issue anymore.
The other thing : a linuxian has still its own distro installed. So having a new one... is not so easy.
For a new comer, it wants to try its hardware to know if it's working under linux without installation.

Finally we thought (project is in a deep deep sleep but some actual software are directly fro lin4astro, i think to siril free-astro.org/index.php/Siril which is based on a lin4astro maker work) :
1) Building a distro is a proof of concept, very useful for public demonstration without no installation on a live DVD. Does yours "live" ?
2) A good point is a PPA/repository/ Metapackage containing all softwares for each distribution. (so it's a pain ;) ...there's too many)
Under mageia for example, there's a "task-astronomy" that install lots of thing ;)

Clear skies,

JB
