It is looking more promising as I can now see many devices.

From another issue, I decided to run the following prior to doing the update and found that a number of icons appeared that I didn't have before.

sudo apt-get install oxygen-icon-theme

I have had kstars abort a few times but at least I am now getting somewhere.
