I'm looking for a reference to a piece of hardware:
I have currently successfully linked my CGE mount to EKOS via a serial lead. Due to the length of cable, this link can drop out from time to time. I then noticed that the EKOS driver/interface for the mount allows both Ethernet and serial options. I'd really like to know more about the Ethernet option, but can't seem to find any references.
I expect that the mount will always need a physical serial connection, and so I expect that the Ethernet option is likely to be a Ethernet network USB printer server type device?
Anyone out there using this option, or can give me a reference to follow up on?
you can use any RS232 to Ethernet adapter like
this one at Amazon
. And connect Ethernet cable and you're set once you know the IP address assigned to it (I assume you can set one manually as well).
That approach doesn't work. The adaptors are 'dumb' connectors, they can't be connected to a LAN and be allocated a IP address. There only real use are to convert one cable type into another for extending the useful length of a serial cable.
I have seen a startech serial to Ethernet IP device. (editor won't allow the URL to be added in here), which will provide an IP addressable Serial link to the network. Is this what INDI web server currently handles?
Actually using good quality twisted pair cable can extend your serial link range quite substantially.
You can also build your own adapter from the small single board computer like RPi zero and some
additional elements for probably 30-40USD. If you opt for RPi zero W you will get wifi capability as a bonus.
