INDI Library v2.0.7 is Released (01 Apr 2024)

Bi-monthly release with minor bug fixes and improvements

Do we need sky object list for telescope drivers?

IMHO, sky object list for telescope drivers will be good for using INDI without computer atlas: KStars, Cartes du Ciel and so on.
1. user select deep sky object from it list.
2. any INDI client can direct our mount to selected sky object.

I talk about control telescope for astrophoto session without computer atlas.
1. INDI driver for telescope needs sky object coordinates.
2. we use KStars or similar soft for direct our telescope to sky object.
3. on the other hand, we can direct our telescope without computer atlas.

We can change current telescope position by hand in INDI device manager.
Do you understand me?

This is all about writing new INDI client that provides sky objects database. Alternatively this functionality could be added to INDI device manager.
It might be good idea for replacing mount-provided controllers.

I talk about new feature for ALL indi_telesope_name drivers.

I would assume that including this feature in each and every mount driver is not very practical. The reason is that such approach would introduce unnecessary code redundancy. Instead I would think of a single code that provides it for all mounts. The easiest way would be to:
Option A) develop INDI driver that is feeding mounts' RA/DEC with data from driver's database (this might still require some changes to mount's drivers for coordinates snooping)
Option B) develop new INDI client that provides requested functionality

@Jasem what is your point of view on option A? Is there any need to change the code of mount's drivers to snoop RA/DEC from another driver to the mount?

Yes, of course.IMHO, new independend INDI driver (like indi_imager_agent) will be more universal.

I think that is great idea. I can support you with developing such a driver.

BTW. Nice feature of the driver would be online and offline objects database. This way we could connect it to the internet based databases such as SIMBAD or similar.

An INDI driver with object database? This is a big no. But an INDI client doing the same? Sure. The drivers are just there to control the hardware and shouldn't do much more than absolutely necessary.

Jasem,
we haven't any astro hardware with name Image Agent , but we have INDI driver indi_imager_agent :)

Peter wrote about this "Image Agent":
"It is virtual driver implementing server side batch imaging. You can configure it to use particular ccd and filter wheel, capture series of imagers to local drive and download them later."

The same applies to some other drivers e.g. WunderGround
As the matter of fact the easiest way would be to snoop RA/DEC property from such a virtual driver to the existing mount drivers. Let's give it a try.
