Astrometry.net can be fed with sources only. Documentation states that if SExtractor is not available to process an input fits file, silve-field will use its bundled extraction algorithm.
So an INDI driver embedding SExtractor could be implemented, providing other drivers or clients with star sources. That's not wavelet but still threshold extraction though, albeit an efficient one. But now the extraction algorithm is in one place.
Also, transfer time could perhaps slow the chain down. However that allows moving drivers to the most relevant hardware I suppose.
