Having issues starting PHD2

Having some problem starting PHD2 in astroberry. I have the latest updates and upgrades. When I click on the icon to start PHD2 it gives me the hour glass for a 10-15 sec but the window never comes up. When I click again it tells me there is an instance already running. After checking with task manager I can confirm that there is indeed a PHD2.bin running there. I can stop/kill this instance from task manager and then start PHD2 again to see the same thing happening again.
It's like it is running, it just refuses to give me a desktop window. How do I fix this issue?

Since there is no input on the issue, is it possible to uninstall PHD2 with sudo apt-get- remove phd2 and then reinstall with sudo apt-get-install phd2?
PHD2 was installed with the latest astroberry package, and I don't know too much about how Linux based system works.

Hi moxican,

I seem to remember I had this happen a while back and I think that it was a problem that is pretty well known. Having said that I can't quite remember what I did to fix it. :( I think that it is related to quitting the program in a certain way and it leaves a file in your home directory that makes phd2 think that you have an instance already running.
I did find the answer on Cloudy Nights I think but it was a while ago now.
You could just try opening up your home directory (ensure that you can see hidden files by going to the "view" sub menu and check "see hidden files". Try renaming the phd2 related file there (you can restore this if it does not work then) and see if that works.
If you need to delete phd2 you just do sudo apt-get remove phd2 then sudo apt-get install phd2 to reinstall.
I think that this would be OK in Astroberry. But be aware that Astroberry is all preconfigured and sometimes removing one package can affect others.
I always have a cloned SD card as a fall back in these situations. It is easy to do by using the SD card copier in the accessories menu. I would do this before you make any major changes.

I am sorry I can't be sure of the solution but it may point you in the right direction.

Mike

Thanks, that is exactly what I am looking for. I've tried to search for the thread on CN but was unable to find. Could you recall some keywords I could search the thread by?

Hi moxican,

OK I slept on it and remembered that it was the phd2 forum on google groups that mentioned this as a known bug. The solution was simple. Here is the link to the forum question.
groups.google.com/g/open-phd-guiding/c/U...ZUYrA/m/PQ7FGnfEAwAJ
In a nutshell there should be a file in your home directory called phd2.1. Look for the file and delete it. If this is the problem that you are having you should then be able to start phd2 as normal.
If you cannot locate the file it is likely that the problem stems from elsewhere.
The google phd2 forum is worth joining as sometimes these conversations do not appear to come up on the usual searches.

Hope this helps.

Replied by Jack on topic Having issues starting PHD2

Just a quick addenda to this topic. I just had the spinning hour glass and nothing ... (Astroberry / RPi4, latest 2.6.9Dev4 PHD2)

I had to kill the phd2.bin task then rm phd2.1 file. Did not fix the problem, turned out my ~/.PHDGuidingV2 file was corrupt.
Blowing it away fixed the problem - of course I had to rebuild my profile (that file is where that data is stored).

I'm just documenting this for future searches as I could only find the phd2.1 advice anywhere else.
