Modifying the shutter release command is sent for my old Nikon D60

Noob-ish post here.
So I have an old Nikon D60 for which I built an IR shutter release cable. Everything works, except when in Bulb mode, the Nikon expects to receive an IR command at the beginning of the exposure and on at the end, nothing in between.
It looks like either the Gphoto driver or the Nikon driver sends a continuous signal to the shutter cable. This makes the camera take many many pictures instead of a single long exposure.

I'm using Ekos/kstars to operate all of this, does anyone have an idea how to have the shutter release cable send a short impulse at the beginning and at the end of the exposure?
