Check settings under Options/ Fits, it might have something to do with checking/unchecking the Auto Debayer. Not 100% sure as I haven't used a DSLR.

Right, it works for the guiding camera but not for the primary scope/camera. I always double check that I set both primary scope and the right camera in the settings on the left side, so its at least not the simplest error. :-) I will try to provide some screenshots, but this means to setup the entire scope (I will not fake it with just the simulator where everything works). And don't understand me wrong: I don't want to blame EKOS for this issue, I'm convinced it will be my own mistake - and hopefully it is so simple that someone else already stumbled on it.

Regards,

Jürgen

Good point, Mark. I don't think that I ever changed this. But when it works for a dedicated astro mono camera and it does not work for a DSLR color camera it could have to do with the different resolutions/image sizes (can't change the binning for the DSLR) or perhaps the interpretation of the pixel data (bayer pattern). I will check my settings here. Unfortunately, this summer is very cloudy. I cannot test anything, but probably I can make screenshots and get the logs working with my setup.

Here are my screenshots attached below. Due to the weather conditions I did not capture any stars, so this time it is expected to get no stars as an error message. If this is not enough we need to wait for the next observing session hopefully on Friday or Saturday. I also got at three crashes during this short session - the current version is not really stable, but this is another topic (is there a special board where I can help to find those bugs? I will try to reproduce them if I can). Back to the main topic here. Debayering is checked on and I also could enable logging into files (the "Default" is misleading and seems to log only into the message bar below). Sounds all negative but I'm really convinced that this is a really great project that deserves all support we can give for all of us!

Hopefully someone already might see any wrong setting here - I don't see it. Otherwise I will provide logs next time from a real working session. But I believe there was not any star visible at anytime in the preview during plate solving while using the canon with the primary scope, but I can remember that I already used it with the canon and a 300mm lens directly from my Raspberry PI - it never worked with smaller fields on the RPI due to performance issues. For this reason I'm now using a remote connection to the RPI to avoid using too much resources on the RPI. Before someone asks, I installed all index files.

Any idea how to proceed is highly welcome. Otherwise I will try to improve the orientation of my guiding scope as a temporary workaround, but this will have only limited success. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Cant see anything wrong with your settings, how many attempts does the solver try? I only see one attempt in the screen shots, usually you should get aligned in 3 or 4 attempts.
Maybe try raising the accuracy to 30 or more.

I've had issues before similar to this, but it's been so long ago that I can't remember how I solved it.

Given the ISO 3200 and exposure time of 60 seconds, but the image doesn't show stars it could be: a) camera is not focused, b) mirror lockup might be an issue. Are you able to see stars/sources when you take an image in the Capture module, rather than the Align module? If you're not getting stars there, then it is to do with the camera settings.
 • If you've not focused before aligning, then just slew to a bright source and focus first.
 • Once focused you might want to check that your Ekos settings for BULB and Mirror Lockup are the same as on the camera.
For my Canon 70D when doing polar alignment I use ISO800 and exposure around 5 seconds and I don't have any issues with detecting stars.

Another thing you might want to look at, is on the Camera is your image quality setting RAW or JPEG? (It's okay to be RAW+JPEG) because JPEG is lossy compression, shoot in RAW.

Hi Will,

I can capture images using my scope and the Canon 700D. Last night I focused on the moon limb. Capture and solve failed using the Canon, but after switching to the guide scope and guiding camera it targeted M13 perfectly in the center of the image from the guiding camera. The image from the Canon showed M13 with 60s exposure (with a Baader Moon and Skyglow filter) but not centered and it took me many preview images to center it (I'm convinced Ekos can do a better job on this). More problematic was capturing NGC6960 due to 300s exposure using L-Extreme filter. Its very impractical to frame the target manually and if the night is only less than 3 hours long you just don't get enough frames for a good image. And if the target is not good enough centered it does not make sense to stack multiple nights. I use the 700D only for astrophotography and it is shooting in RAW with Mirror lock enabled (and I'm sure it works). The Mirror lock is also enabled in the driver settings of the camera and in the properties (I don't know if this is necessary too).

Okay, I have no idea how to get the things to work. But what I can do next Friday (if the weather let me do something) is try it again and I will also put my guiding camera to my primary scope. If this combination works it must have something to do with the camera and its settings, otherwise if it fails it must be an issue with the 600mm focus length.I'm.not sure if the log files can bring some more light into this.

Thanks for your "educated guesses"!

Mark,

Thank you! When using the guiding camera it takes 3-4 attempts until its aligned in the image of the guiding camera, just to far away for my primary optics. When using the Canon it takes a second image before it aborts the stellar solver, because it just never detects any star. I'm not sure if I did ever see stars in the image preview during capture and solving using the Canon. If others are using a Canon with the same primary scope and it works this must be either very different software versions or some kind of misconfiguration - I'm still tend to consider this as my own mistake.

Only thing I can suggest is that the filter is cutting out a lot of light.
So up the ISO to 6400 or more and maybe shorten the exposures if the image gets blown out.
Default Accuracy is 30 which should be fine for 600mm FL.

Yes, I also had some concerns about this. For this reason I used the 60s exposure (the same I used for M13) per subframe. However, I will also try this without any filter to have short exposures. If this would solve the issue I will need another way to change the filter. Thanks for your ideas...

Last night I tried again to get capture and solve to run successfully. This time I captured NGC6960 using a 200mm lens with my canon as a primary scope and I used the ZWO ASI 120mm mono Mini together with my 80/600 scope as guiding scope. I observed the following:

1.) Using 80/600 and ZWO capture and solve worked very well. After it was dark enough the solver found a solution each time!
2.) Using the Canon with 200mm lens with capture and solved failed again each time.

With the Canon I tried several things: I switched on and of "use scaling" and the WKS. Nothing helped. I also changed the image dimensions of the Canon to the correct values:Max. image resolution:5184 x 3456
And also changed the pixel pitch: 4.29 µm

In the Ekos log file still the old value for the image width 5208 was used, this is the only thing that I could find. A few weeks ago I captured and solved successfully with the Canon and a 300mm lens - this was done using the previous version of kStars 3.5.3 on the Raspberry PI directly. Now I'm running 3.5.4 stable on the MacBook Air - and using this version it always fails. I don't believe that it would work with the 300mm lens - and I did not try it yesterday. This morning I used the simulator setup with "load and slew" using one single captured subframe I shot yesterday with the camera and it was indeed solved correctly - kStars moved the virtual scope to NGC6960 again. It also seems that the exposure time textbox now only accepts times below 60s - I tried yesterday 90s and 120s but only 9s and 12s were accepted.

So, now I'm completely lost here. It just does not work and I could also not find anything useful in the log files. I have uploaded both the Ekos log and the astrometry.net log (internal solver) to my cloud drive (the complete files). You can find it here: Cloud Drive

For your convenience I will include some small parts here, but perhaps the "experts" need to have a look at the entire log file. The astrometry.net log is extremely useless for me, because it just does not show any time, so you have no chance to bring it in relation to the Ekos log.

In the entire log you will find several entries for org.kde.kstars.ekos.align, some for the ZWO "successfully" solved and all for the Canon without success. Maybe, anybody else finds a hint of what's going wrong here and what I would need to change in my settings. However, the settings must also be used by Ekos when I change them. I'm a little bit concerned about the different image widths, but I double checked that I entered the correct image with in the driver settings. When nothing else helps I can only hope for another version of kStars or I can just delete anything in reinstall it to avoid any wrong settings.
Starts to become a little bit frustrating...

PS: I also noticed another thing: the solver took about 6s for the ZWO but timed out really immediately after the start when using a captured image from my canon. However, the index files must be readable, otherwise I could not use one of my captured image from my session yesterday to load and slew...
PSS: The last trial for the alignment module around 03:26 CEST was done without any filter and with long exposures. I also checked that an image preview of the camera did show stars in the image, because the sky background was already becoming brighter.

Any help is highly appreciated...
Thanks in advance...

Several nights later I'm still unable to solve this issue! My best workaround was using the ZWO ASI 120mm Mini guiding camera to capture images and solve and trying to point the guiding scope and the primary scope to the same location - as good as possible. Unfortunately, this is only a very bad solution and does not really work quite well.

I tried again last night and failed all the time. I started to capture my first subframe after 2 hours of trial and error, then the second subframe ... than crashed the Astroberry Server, then KStars and again one hour later I did find nearly the same frame manually again and continued capturing - again kstars again crashed and I repeated, finally clouds came up and I stopped my session with just two frames after 3 1/2 hour of work done - this starts to become really frustrating now.

Today I tried to load and solve the captured image using all possible options, with and without scaling and with all the different solvers possible using the simulators. Nothing really worked. The internal solver fails, ASTAP fails (but is really fast) and the online Astrometry.net slewed the telescope solver near IC 1396 multiple times (50' away from the target), after the 6th slewing it failed with a missing id from queue error, but it was at least somewhere near the location. Some of the other options did run more than 10 minutes until I stopped them, without using the scale it sometimes finds the solution in the first step and then fails after slewing.

However, the good news for me is now I have an image that leads to all this trouble and is reproducible. I'm sure it has to do with the image dimensions (or at least this is my educated guess). The log shows:

Image width: 3474 pixels, but the image size is 5184x3456, so there is a discrepancy. I did set the ccd image resolution in the ccd simulator (using the values from my Canon EOS 700D, I tried the sensor size in pixels and the maximum image size (I already tried this with my real camera too) - with no luck). Why the hell does this not work?

Background: there will be some issues and crashes left in the next time in KStars/Ekos and Astroberry. This is not nice but if I could restore my frame with this function it would not be that big deal. At the moment when something goes wrong this is just a terrible pain, because it just takes a long time to get nearly the same framing back. For this reason this is the most important feature I need and the final showstopper, if it never works (I think using the defaults for most things here is still the best option).

Here is the link to my image . Please, if any of the developers could have a look at this and find out why this does not work? Maybe, it works under some other conditions, I'm running KStars on a MacBook Air? Even without any filter attached to my camera and the longest exposure time - I don't even see stars in the image that is resolved. I don't think it is really a solver issue, something strange is going on here, as it works most of the time using my guiding camera but always fails using the DSLR. Or it is just an issue of this special combination of hardware?

Thanks in advance,
Jürgen
