To disable rotation validation, uncheck the Rotator option in Alignment Options was created by Ray

I suspect I can't see the wood for the trees but can someone tell me where I can find the "Rotator option" referred to in the title please in 3.6.2

Hi Ray - not sure if this is what you are looking for but, in the Align module, click the options button in the bottom right hand corner. You'll get a pop up window with the first section being 'Stellar Solver Options'. There is a Rotator Settings check box there that may be what you're looking for.
