TOPIC: Announcing Ekos Live

Announcing Ekos Live 4 months 4 weeks ago #26614

I'm excited to announce Ekos Live, which is in beta now!

1. What is Ekos Live?

It's a real-time web application that can be run from any browser. It allows you to control many aspects of Ekos right from the browser. It is built around material-ui from Google, so it is very friendly for mobiles & tablets on any platform.

It should also enable the user to upload and save images to the cloud (not implemented now, but later) with the ability to search, tag, share, sort images..etc.

2. When will it launch?

Sometime in July 2018 I hope, if all goes well with the beta testing.

3. Who will participate in the beta testing?

Oh, I'm glad you asked that! I am looking for 5 (might expand this later) dedicated individuals with technical backgrounds who are willing to test Ekos Live and submit feedback. You must know how to compile code from Git. If you're interested, let me know.

4. Is this going to be free?

Yes! There will be two tiers, a free tier, and a paid tier. This depends on bandwidth usage which we have to pay for somehow, in addition to hosting charges..etc

4.1 Free Ekos Live: Would support most functionality, but no cloud storage and bandwidth per month is limited (limit is not yet decided).
4.2. Paid Ekos Live: Would support all functionality with no bandwidth limits. Traffic is prioritized in case of congestion over the free plan. Plus other small benefits.

5. Is this a replacement for Ekos?

No! It's a complementary service as it utilizes Ekos in the backend.

6. Do I need to buy StellarMate to use Ekos Live?

Negative! It would work with KStars/Ekos starting with version 2.9.7 to be released in July 2018.

Really amazing work. I can't believe how full featured it is for a V1. Great job.

Hi Jasem, looks really exciting - I am just wondering what is the advantage of a web-based application, compared to the one I download to my computer? What is the use case you have in mind? I thought it might be for people with an observatory „far away“ - or is there also a benefit for people that are next to their mount? Would be very curious as always!

This looks great. But a question. Does it have to be cloud based? Can it be hosted directly on the Raspberry Pi, for example? Put the Pi in hotspot mode, and my phone or tablet can connect to the Pi when I'm out in the middle of nowhere with no Internet access.

Agree with the idea of using it far from Internet access. My dark sites are dark in light, wifi and even cell phones. Truly off the grid.

Not yet, but it would be quite reasonable I assure you. I spent a lot of time in the development phase and now have to see how it actually scales along the associated costs.

Excellent question! For me, it would be very useful to use Ekos Polar Alignment Assistant tool directly without having to use TeamViewer..etc. Another use is for folks to monitor the progress of an ongoing astrophotography session while somewhere else. I've received stories like "My guiding aborted while I was an hour away and I couldn't do anything about it until I came back to my observatory". Well now with this, you can do such corrective actions from a distance! I'm sure there are other use cases, maybe for EAA as well (I plan on adding live stacking later).

I can see a use case for this. However, for the time being, I will work on the cloud deployment aspect. Maybe I can release a future version for offline use!
