Maudy:
You can configure system resolution in the /boot/config.txt file
elinux.org/RPiconfig
For example adding / uncommenting the relevant lines in config.txt. In my case
Custom Hotplug Display
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=28
This represents the 28th configuration in group 2, or 1200x800 at 60hz

Make sure to set hdmi_group to 2. The other day I set it to 1 and didn’t get a display on my monitor.

Note to self:
I uninstalled all vncservers I could find, as well as xrdp
Then reinstalled xrdp and vnc4server (one of the recommended support packages). This had the following effect
- the keyboard problem in kstars was solved
- starting ekos with simulators froze the ekos screen after it had started an instance of indi. There may have been a message window behind the ekos window that caused this. i could drag windows across the desktop, but they were just not responsive when clicked in.

Uninstalled vnc4server and xrdp and reinstalled xrdp
Installed tightvncserver. The keyboard problem was back, but kstars and ekos worked flawlessly, no unresponsive windows.

This file does not exist on the Rock64 image for xenial_minimial.

@Wim - sorry, for the side thread...

I do have x11vncserver working fine on the Rock64. I am using the armhf version of the image though. Did you try to confirm the x11fonts are all there? It was locale and x11fonts that solved this same symptom for me. Using the xenial armhf minimal image, required building the whole desktop environment for me. Using the armhf image allows me to get TheSkyX running on the Rock64 :)

No worry about the side thread, Maudy.
I run arm64. The system works fine with indi, and kstars on windows. It's just that if I run kstars on the Rock, that I have this problem. The keyboard works when I run xrdp with cnv4server and windows remote desktop. But the app screens in ekos freezes. This otoh works fine with xrdp and tightvncserver. But then the keyboard in the kstar's find dialog and ekos configuration manager don't work (q becomes c, etc). The keyboard works fine in libre office and terminal.
For now, I'll continue using indi headless on the Rock.

Are you using the same locale and keyboard layouts on the Windows machine and the Rock? It is weird though that this only shows up in KStars and not in other applications...

These keyboard issues are long standing bugs in kde/gnome it seems. I found this discussion with several workarounds discussed.

The problem disappeared when I installed Ubuntu 18.04.
