Update failure :"Package system is broken" was created by Maxchess

Hi,
Just tried to update my Stellarmate on RPI 3 using the Software update button. after successfully checking for updates and giving me a list I get the following message when I try to start the update:

The Package System is broken, Check if you are using third party repositories, if so disable them......

I have run the updater before with no problems, also tried updating only PHD from the checklist.
don't really want to re-install as I will lose all my settings

Any ideas?

Click on the "Mate Terminal" and type this:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade

Does it go OK or you get errors?

I get a few errors and it all goes suspiciously fast with no mention of PHD being updated,

Try running:
sudo apt-get -f install
first then run what I posted before if that went OK.

Ok, that worked, thanks.

Ran both commands which completed successfully and just to check ran software updater which now says I am up to date.
