Bi-monthly release with minor bug fixes and improvements

KStars crashes repeatedly - FITS-viewer associated?

In case of the (very rare!) crashes I encountered I usually start KStars from the command line. Just open a terminal and type kstars and press enter. In case of a crash some info may be printed in the terminal but please note that this doesn't always happen.

Hello Chris,

Sorry about your troubles. I would presume your KStars is v2.9.8? Check my signature on how to send logs to diagnose any issues.

@Wouter/Jasem

Dear Wouter, dear Jasem,

thanks again for your quick response...
At the moment I'm in my office, but yes, it should be version 2.9.8.

Unfortunately it crashed minimum 5 times yesterday and what changed to my former tests was the intensive use of the FITS-viewer...
But since it just vanished out of nothing I didn't catch the exact moment to get a glimpse of what was going on.

I'm having a look in the logs this evening and send them to you, Jasem.

Keep up the great work (since after all KStars/Ekos is great work)...

Cheers & CS Chris

What camera did you use when you experienced the crash?
If your cam has pixels more than 24M, your problem may be the same as that I encoutered:

www.indilib.org/forum/ekos/3891-kstars-o...-large-fit-file.html

To avoid the crash, I set the resolution setting in the capture module of Ekos smaller, while setting the image-saving option in the INDI control panel as SD card. If you use a DSLR, this work-around would avoid the crash.

@koichi

I'm using the ASI 1600 MMC pro - so it's 16Mpix

But nevertheless I'm suspecting the FITS-file/viewer to be the culprit.

Just to get you updated, it's KStars 2.9.8.

The sky didn't allow me field experiments, but would you rather want me to test the 2.9.8 with verbose logfiles, or should I try a nightly release to see what happens???

Chris, I'd suggest nightly since we are getting close to this release.

Just another update...

The sky has been awkward recently, so I wasn't able to test it in the last two weeks.
INDI/KStars/Ekos is up to date with the nightly build so that I'm ready to go when the sky clears up.

I'll keep You informed

Cheers and CS

I have had issues with KStars terminating or becoming unresponsive while collecting multiple images. "Use FITS viewer" is checked and it seemed to possibly be somehow related. With ongoing bad weather have not progressed collecting logs to submit a query. I don't know if it is a real issue but have the following after seeing the advise to run KStars in a terminal session.

Can you reproduce this? If yes, how exactly?

I’ve had the exact same issue the last couple of times I tried using Stellarmate /Kstars. It occurred two weekends in a row. Stellarmate as server with Kstars/Ekos running on my Windows 10 Surface. Kstars would crash on my surface some random number of captures into a sequence. I had to stay up all night both times continually resetting the sequence. I was running the latest nightly builds on both Stellarmate and my Win 10 Surface. I too feel like the crashing is rested to the FITS viewer. I’ve since swapped back to my M3 compute stick with SGP until Kstars proves to be more stable. Hope the new release is more or less bug free as I love Kstars! I may swap back to Stellarmate my next night out and test with the newest nightly build since it has been a couple of weeks.

There is no pattern at all to this crash? no crash log?
