INDI Library v1.7.6 Released. (27 Feb 2019)

First release of 2019 comes with quite a few new drivers across the board along with significant performance improvements to INDI camera and live streaming performance. Many drivers received significant updates to improve performance & stability, while a few were re-written from scratch to be in line with INDI standards. Here are some of the highlights:

Autofocus issue (screencapture included) was created by fusis

Hi,

I am taking one hurdle at a time, because I realy want EKOS to work for me, but I keep running into issues. I hope some of you can help me understand what I am experiencing with the autofocus function.

Basically it is this:

Autofocus rarely gets the optimum result, worse even it chooses a very bad focus or it fails.
I start from a reasonably ok focus.
I made a video so you can see what happens. I also included the logs for the session.

1drv.ms/f/s!As3ajDTyZ50_hchRseNrwz0BmKwbrA

I test it with an artifical star. The star is picked automatically. I start out with an HFR of 1.3 and in the end it even looses the focus completely. The steps are becoming larger and larger, for what reason? Sometimes I start out at 1.5 and autofocus completes with an HFR of 5 or even higher...

Realy looking forward to you insights.

Thanks,

Marco

Have you tried default settings for Algorithm (Iterative) and Detection (Gradient)? Especially the latter - it seems that the detection does no work well.
Also I would suggest increasing Max Travel with a step at 50. The point is that the algorithm must plot a V-curve (not literally as Ekos goes just for a part of V-curve to settle) - now the constraint might be too tight.

So there were a few problems:

1. The driver was not behaving correctly. This is now fixed in GIT.
2. KStars was always assuming 50,000 when starting when it shouldn't. This is now fixed in GIT.
3. Despite the two issues above, from the logs at least it seems the HFR values in _both_ directions were higher so you're very close to the correct position, so maybe using a lower value helps.

At any rate, test against with the nightly releases of INDI & KStars tomorrow after they get updated.

Thanks Jasem,

That may indeed explain the behavior I experience.

You mention: 3. Despite the two issues above, from the logs at least it seems the HFR values in _both_ directions were higher so you're very close to the correct position, so maybe using a lower value helps.

Just to be sure, what value are you referring to? Is it a value to be set?

To get to the nightly build I had to switch over to another repository. I uses your instructions to change it on my Stellarmate, but unfortunately after updating my Stellermate experience a kernel panic on restarting.

I will reflash v1.3.2 and try to switch over again.

Thanks,

Marco

It is the HitecAstro DC driver.

I have had a lot of issues with it but I hope this will make it usable finally.

Hmmm, thought it might be, I used to have that same focuser unit, but got rid and bought the Pegasus version and never had an issue with that..
Hope it gets sorted :)

Just checking, I am on the nightly builds, but did not see any new drivers... assuming I would have seen one in there name hitecastro...
How can I tell if I am using the updated version?

Thanks,

Marco

well, for one if you moved it by a 100, it should reflect that and not more. I also just bumped the driver version to 0.2 but that will appear tomorrow.

I want to let you know that focussing has improved greatly.

There is one thing I did notice, there is a little backlash of about 10 steps (I have the stepspeed at 100). So when the direction of focus changes the relative position changes a little. If we could overcome this then I guess this would be really beneficial to a lot of users.

I have a Hitec Astro DC Focusser with the native skywatcher Auto Focus option.
