last KStars beta - catalogs are broken

Tried the latest beta everything yesterday.
All worked fine but KStars (June 24 2021)
- catalog management system changed
- catalogs have to be re-installed
- search doesn't find many objects even though they are shown in the sky chart.
- Sharpless catalog; to search for "Sh2 129", I now have to type "Sharpless 129" - too much typing!
- not all in-line images shown.

I guess that's just because it's beta and will be ironed out soon.
Just reporting...

The above was on a RPI4 client/server running Stellarmate.
I just tried the latest Windows nightly build.
-- exactly the same behavior.

Not complaining. It's beta... I understand.

Thanks, this is part of the GSoC 2021 project to overhaul DSOs.

1. Which objects visible on the sky map but cannot be searched?
2. Which objects are missing inline thumbnails?

To name just a couple:
M45! Both search and image. Not in the sky map either.
NGC 2359 (near Thor) - in the sky map but not in the search.
LDN 1231 (near Bubble) - in the sky map but not in the search.

Hi,
thank you for compiling this list of issues.

The missing objects on the skymap had unknown magnitude, which i foolishly set to 99. It is now NaN and the objects will be shown.
You can download the updated catalog in a day or so from knewstuff or directly from the CI as soon as it is built. I will post a link.

As to the inline images: please re-download them from knewstuff.

The objects missing in the search: messier objects are now NGC objects, also the same magnitude issue applies. I am working on improving the search for DSOs. The new system doesn't fit well with the old.
You can search directly in the catalogs, though through the Catalog Manager. (not optimal...)

I've updated the sharpless catalog to use "Sh2 ..." as the short name.

Just a quick question. When you say the "Messier objects are now NGC objects", do you mean that you will only be able to find the Messier objects by searching their NGC designation? If so, I think we need to do what we can to also be able to search by the Messier name. Charles documented objects that are large and bright and easy to find. It is a great catalog to get started in astronomy. No worries if I am not understanding your statement.

Most objects have their M number in the long name, so you can search for them with the messier number

While Messier objects do have NGC numbers if the NGC number is referenced first in the database that is the number that is
used when imaging (camera tab file name title). When I slew to M83 and start taking images the files should be named M_83...
not NGC_...

And yes I know I can rename the file title field but that is just one more thing I must remember to do.

I've changed the new ngc catalog so that the Messier objects have their M XX name as primary name.
This will break the inline thumbnails until we update their name again...

You can download the newest CI builds of the catalogs from here: protagon.space/catalogs/pages/catalogs.html
and import them through Data->Manage DSO Catalogs->Import Catalog.

In general, if you have issues with the catalogs themselves or want a catalog added, you can open an issue under invent.kde.org/vboettcher/kstars-catalogs/-/issues
