UPDATE:
If I make a new user, it runs fine.
What must I remove from my current user to enable me to run from there?

hmmm... possibly couple of things.

~/.config/kstarsrc

or

~/.local/share/kstars

I've narrowed it down to:
~/.local/share/kstars

It's not the userdb.sqlite though. I tried moving it out of the folder, but nada. Also, the latest git runs fine on the same box using the same folder.
Attached is a list of files in the kstars folder. Any idea which it could be?

Steve: I've never looked at the comets code, but given that your crash happened just after reading comets.dat, that's definitely the one I'd try.

Yes. That was the offending file (works with git not with stable)
The error upon opening the file is:

The file /home/steve/Desktop/comets.dat was opened and contained lines longer than the configured Line Length Limit (10.000 characters).
The longest of those lines was 777.258 characters long
Those lines were wrapped and the document is set to read-only mode, as saving will modify its content.

Removing comets.dat from the folder allows 3.5.5 stable to load and run.
