TOPIC: Exoplanet observation powered by INDI + EKOS

Exoplanet observation powered by INDI + EKOS 9 months 1 week ago #22345

Just sharing some success stories :-)
A short video of a recent exoplanet observation powered by the EKOS scheduler.

The scheduler is awesome!!! It waited till the correct time, opened the roof, unparked scope, took 200 images, then parked scope &closed the roof while I was sleeping.

Also, other news. Some data I collected using INDI & EKOS has been used in a recent paper published about tabby's star.
Couldnt be done without this amazing system.

Wow this is nice!! I am actually getting into photometry myself. This of course entails not only measurement of fluxes and aperture photometry applications, but could be extended to observe variable stars, exoplanet detection and more. Perhaps this is a good opportunity to discuss what needs to be done to support this.

On one hand, I don't want Ekos to get too complex, so maybe this could be another separate addition to KStars. A critical step required for photometry is accurate calibrations, so a simple calibration process is required at least. Also, I don't want to spend 2 years developing this, so I was looking for existing solutions to adapt.

So far the most promising is C-Munipack since it's GPL2 and C/C++ based. There are other solutions out there but in python and other languages.

So what do guys think? This probably needs to be broken down into separate layers to be implemented independently with time.

We can use AstroimageJ for realtime/pipeline photometry:

1. VaST [Variability Search Toolkit] A software for variable star detection on a series of astronomical images.

2.
Siril , a free astronomical image processing software/
Its new features allow to analyse exoplanet transits with new photometry tool!

Jasem,
Yes I agree with you, I dont think EKOS should get too complex. I think it should be just data-acquisition only. Data reduction should be a different application. There are lots out there. I use astropy's ccdproc for calibration (bias, flat, dark correction) and photutils for photometry. Although in the video above the graph was created with astroimagej.....
The EKOS shutdown script triggers my data reduction pipeline and works well. I think its better to get ekos to integrate with something else rather than build in photometric features into it.

Great work! (both for dokeeffe but also for all the people involved in indi/ekos)

Jasem, some years ago I used to do photometry (both exoplanets and variable stars) with gcx:
gcx.sourceforge.net/
github.com/cmatei/GCX
(cmatei tried to add some INDI support but I don't know the current state)

Anyway, the first link contains a lot of documentation and all the math involved is sound and well described.

Thanks,
Riccardo

I would love to have a photometric reduction pipeline in Kstars!!!
