Great minds think alike.... ;)

I finished my (INDI) autofocuser, was planning to build a rotator when it became obvious that with a narrower FOV, I really could use one... My new 125mm TS refractor is on its way, and it has plenty of back focus, that avoids some of the problems

For my build I decided to treat the rotator like the autofocus, as the issue is very comparable: "Turn this knob/ tube n times" is simple enough. My model, I am plannin on a non-geared NEMA11, will have only a 200 degree range of rotation, which again will reduce cable issues, avoids the belt slipping, and allows me to put the sensor in any position.

I am building my own rotating tube, ball bearings and all, and will simply clamp the timing belt to the tube carrying flattener/filters/camera.... that belt cannot slip!

Do you have any sensor tilt problems? That worries me a bit.

any other hints/ possible pitfalls you might be able to share?

I find it funny that MoonLite ( their thingy costs over 2 K) boasts a pointing accuracy of 0.01 degrees or better....LOL how useless is that! And I love the fact that mine (like yours I guess) costs me less than a fancy steak...

Yours looks great!

Well this is not mine this is the plan i took on internet. I will post photo on mine. No slippage. I crazy glued timing belt around the moonlite....

Hi,
do you found a solution for the arduino code and driver that is compatible with INDI?

To be fair Moonlite do a simple timing belt based rotator for $440. That's the difficult bit - the rotation assembly - and a stepper motor and brackets.

Most people won't have the engineering skills to make the rotator mechanism.

It is not a big problem build a system like this imgur.com/a/avYSxME, the only problem is the indi driver. I found another project that receive some simple serial commads. I am tring to convert it to be used with INDI

I was just done yesterday from developing Seletek Rotator driver, which is really a stepper-motor tuned into rotator with belt.

Is this absolute position? relative position? If you can get position, issue GOTO to specific position, and sync position, then it would be trivial to make a rotator driver.

Here there is a project built on Arduino sourceforge.net/projects/arduino-myrotator/files/Firmware/

It wait for some serial commands, that execute an action, go to position, reset, get currecnt pos ecc

I saw that and it tells me nothing about the most important part, the mechanism that allows the two parts of the OTA assembly to rotate without slop or wobble. A video showoing it working when pointed straight down tells us nothing.

Some focusers are able to rotate, like this one of my RC8. A solution like this one imgur.com/a/avYSxME
www.teleskop-express.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p5769
Just create a bracket that is locked on the mobile side and create a geared ring and fix it on the fixed side of the focuser .
I was unable to create the indi driver :(

Probably the project that i would originally use, has some little problems in managing serial commands. I am switching to another one
