Very, VERY interested in learning if and how well Stellarmate OS and Kstars/Ekos runs with the new PI 4. This is exactly the upgrade I've been waiting for - REALLY hope SM OS plays well with it. Also would be HUGE if we could now run Ekos smoothly on the PI instead of remotely - man would that be great!

...Eagerly awaiting news and reviews!

I have been waiting for this upgrade for so long. But I'm still leaning towards the more powerful, yet pricier Odroid-N2. Decisions, decisions.

Looks like all the US distributors are out of stock on the 4GB version for at least a month. That being said, the RPi3 only had 1GB of RAM and still ran Ekos. The 2GB version should be sufficient for Stellarmate...

RPI3 runs Ekos+PHD2 just fine. Only platesolving takes some time, especially with long focal length telescopes.

In the near future Jasem does this mean:

a) new StellarMate's will be based on the Pi4 in the near future
OR
b) I can buy a Pi4 and then buy the StellarMate firmware for it

Thanks, Craig

Give Jasem a break the RPI4 was only announced officially yesterday and he hasn't got one yet to see what problems they are , if any. Just saying :-)

Fantastic news!

I wasn't expecting a Pi 4 until next year. This new version will give performance to an already solid INDI/Ekos implementation on ARM and an even more enjoyable IoT solution for Astrophotography. I expect INDI/EKOS eventually to support planetary and solar imaging at some point.
Other interesting projects might now become a reality like for instance automated meteorite detection/mapping from an all sky camera... The sky is the limit!

Well as expected SM or Ubuntu for that matter does NOT work on the new rpi4
So will need to wait for the guys at Ubuntu to get on board and help with this, it’s not at all just down to Jasem....but I am sure time permitting he will do his bit.. :)

You'd be far better served using a metal detector to find meteorites than a telescope with Stellarmate. ;) Meteors are inbound and have not YET, but are about to hit Earth. Meteorites are the remnants of a meteor AFTER it hits Earth. Perhaps you meant asteroids - rocks in an orbit within our solar system?

I have decided to join the Raspberry Pi 4 club after all and have a 4GB model on the way.
I chose not to get the Odroid-N2 due to a few reasons.
1. Wide community adoption will have better long term support. *This was the determining factor.
2. It looks like it will have ample processing power
3. Better price.
4. Ubuntu MATE for RPi4 is officially in development
