Raspberry rpi4 issues with 4K over VNC

If I get the rpi all connected with mouse, keyboard and monitor, and get It running in 4K it works well, then I connect via VNC from another PC while still having the rpi connected to a monitor, it comes up on the PC in VNC in 4K....

BUT as soon as I do the same with no monitor connected to the rpi, all I get is a black screen in VNC with message saying can’t show to desktop at this time...

So, if I set the resolution in raspi config to 95 rather than the default, then try it all again, VNC will now show the rpi desktop but in a really low resolution, and when I try and change it through VNC all the 4K settings have gone, and it’s also very difficult to change the res at all, and when I can 1920x1080 is the highest it will go, but even that is hard to change, it seems to want to stay at about 1200x720 or something like that..

I don’t understand why it will work with monitor connected to rpi but not without, have even tried a dummy HDMI plug...

The problem is that on a 28” 4K monitor even HD res is rubbish..for my needs...

So this rpi4 is no use for my astro set up which requires it to be outside on a telescope, and controlled via VNC from a laptop indoors. :( :(

Maybe you could try XRDP. It builds a second session rather then copying the existing session as for VNC. I use it for my Pi 4 but up to now in HD.

I don't know if it's possible on the Rpi4, but you might try NoMachine as a vnc replacement.

Unfortunally, I can't work higher the 1920x1080. It is a small package and installing is as simple as sudo apt-get install xrdp. For me it works very well. If your laptop is Windows, you can use the Microsoft remote desktop directly without any additional installation.

Had a look into this and will give it a try later...
I normally use a Linux laptop, but if I can get it to work on my windows machine, then that’s a great start and at least I can use on there for now...thanks.. :)

Hello,

hope you're well.

May I ask - are you attempting to get Stars/Ekos/INDI running on the Pi 4 using the Stellarmate image? I ask because I'm very interested in doing this too.

Any information you can share about this I would be very glad to see.

Clear Skies (Someone has to get them :-) )

Hi,
Yes I have latest Kstars and INdI running on the PI4, but not Stellarmate, that will take a while, but runs well on raspbian buster, also runs now in 4K using XRDP on the pi and Remmina Remote Desktop software on Ubuntu laptop...works really well.. :)

Ok I have found a Remote Desktop software for Ubuntu that works really well with XRDP on the pi, it’s called Remmina, and runs a treat.... :) as good if not better than windows Remote Desktop....

Hi,

thanks for the reply. Sorry, more questions.......

Did you have to compile from source ?
Are you Plate-Solving on the Pi ?
Is buster easy to get hold of ? (Not Pi savvy) Been doing stuff on Arduino.

Grateful if you have time to reply.

Regards,
