I am not sure whether there is really anything substantially different between the official Ubuntu MATE support now and the prior install from the server and sequential updates. I suspect the outcome is pretty much the same.
I did it the old fashioned way, starting from the server and sequentially building up the system and my system is also quite stable now. No reason for me to switch that I can see.
But I am looking forward to hearing the experience others might have.

Of course, by now the official Ubuntu system is 20.04.....

Agreed, using official Ubuntu Server as a starting point is the way to go.
Using Ubuntu 20.04 might be a little adventurous - it is a daily build and I doubt that PPA builds of Kstars and INDI are fully functional at this point.
Just a few months ago PPA builds for 19.10 of INDI were partially broken, i.e. some drivers were not available and thus indi-full was not installing.

Hi,
I've just got a RP4 4GB that I want to use instead of my current 1GB (or is it 2GB?) RP4. I decided to give the AstroPiMaker4 script a spin. Is there a particular reason that it uses the 32bit Ubuntu version and not the 64bit?

Good question. In the past, 64 bit was challenging. Keep in mind that the script does not care if it is 32 bit or 64 bit, so feel free to try and report back.
Before doing this, please check if PPAs have 64 builds of kstars and other software.

The script does care. When installing astap it downloads the 32 bit version - there is an error in the makefile concerning the g17 map file. The makefile is missing _astap in the end of the filename three times. I don’t know if there are more places it favours the 32bit Ubuntu.

Anders,
Issues with ASTAP are expected given that it is not installed from repositories.
How about kstars and indi - are they installing and running?

I decided to cancel as I had a problem with the AP creation (not sure what happened). Creating the AP just froze - are you supposed to interact somehow?

I’ve started all over with the 32bit Ubuntu.

No, it should not freeze. I think you made the right decision - there is not much benefit from 64 bit here.

Alex,

Are you still getting the Ubuntu hack from the James Chambers source?
I saw on the Ubuntu site ( ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi ) that regular 32bit and 64bit server builds (18.04.04) for Pi4 are up for download.

Cheers,
Arjan

Ok, I installed everything on 32bit Ubuntu using the AstroPiMaker4 file. I rebooted after creating the AP and loaded up the VNC viewer from my Mac. That did NOT look good! It looks like something from the late 80's or start 90's when it comes to color and graphic and text - like something from the good old Commodore 64 days. Text not clear and everything running very slow. I didn't experience this with my old setup (using Raspbian and the AstroPi3 script). Am I missing something here?

I used to use the hack but is no longer needed.
My latest script under github.com/avarakin/AstroPiMaker4 is using official 32 bit Ubunty 19.10 server installer.

Did you configure VNC viewer to use 24 bit color and best quality? Can you share screenshot?
