Hi,

Is it necessary to point the telescope in the direction of Polaris to execute the polar alignment procedure in Ekos or can it be done with every position?

The polar align assistant should be performed from the home position, pointed towards the celestial pole.

The general direction is OK though. Polaris doesn’t have to be in the FOV, even if it’s 5° wide. Not sure how much further you may be off.

so pointing roughly to NCP is required. You can't do it pointing straight east?

I think you can even simulate the polar alignment routine. IIRC that's also how Jasem did that in one of his tutorial videos.

So, point the simulated mount to wherever you think you want the actual telescope to be pointing at and go 'polar align' the simulated mount! :)

I'm not sure, maybe you need to install the Guide Star Catalog.
Maybe it's as simple as 'install gsc' in the terminal...

Cheers! I'm interested to know how it went.

That's right, the Polar Align Assistant should be pointed up towards the ncp. However if you can not see the celestial pole, you can try the legacy polar alignment tool that requires a view to the south at the celestial equator and an east or west horizon.
