When I was still using SD I just made sure I always had a copy of the current version on a SD card. Then I could do an update and know I could simply swap back to the previous version on the other SD card.

Yes. You can go back to any version you like. To get the dates, in the source directory:
git log
then:
git checkout <comit>
whichever you want or knew worked.
ATM, It looks like this:
~/Projects/indi$ git log
commit 7b81c821653b44be809b1789037d6a66a0c5aeed (HEAD -> master, origin/master, origin/HEAD)
