I have just received my new bearings, wow you can really see and feel the difference. These SKF bearings are top notch quality. Well worth the money.
Awaiting the new grease "Loctite 21030 Super Lube Grease" to arrive.

I have now finished re-assembling the mount.


I am not quite 100% happy, but hey this is the first time I do this.
It was quite simple to put it back together, the bearings can be tricky to install. There is a night/day difference with the old bearings.
The hardest and longest thing to do was to adjust the worms, it takes time and patience....
But, all the issues I had before are now gone, no sticky points, everything is nice and smooth.

I would recommend it if you do have an old HEQ5 pro mount.

Why not 100% happy?

There is a very very very slight tiny little play that I can't remove (yet). I might give another go tomorrow.

It's been almost two years. I am considering doing a bearing upgrade myself. Would you say it was worthwhile?

100% and this combined with the Rowan belt mod I am able to do 32 min exposure (guided) with excellent results

It is fairly easy to do, just take your time, take lots of pictures too.

I changed all bearings in my HEQ5 couple of years ago as well, the larger axis bearings probably didn't make any practical difference, but the small worm bearings were definitely a big improvement.

hi, sorry to resurrect this older post, but I am about to hyper-tune my heq5 pro purchased 2019 new
and need some clarification. I have done a Rowan belt mod. From the heq5 rebuild guide
on astro-baby.com I can see that you need:

1 taper bearings per axis (SKF 30205) = 2 in total
2 deep groove ball bearings per axis (SKF 6006-2Z) = 4 in total
2 deep groove ball bearings per worm gear (SKF 628/9-2Z) = 4 in total

what are the other 6006-2Z bearings for ?

You actually need 5x 6006-2Z (I bought an extra one)
