The GPS NMEA works great. ShareGPS app on your phone and knowing the IP of the phone on the stellarmate network is really all you need for the driver to work. (and a gps lock with your phone of course)

This is the only way I can get a time sync on the pi without internet.

So now I have a working GPS device. I have tested it in windows and its working fine. The data stream is not garbled binary but nice ASCII

I tried it on StellarMate and it worked too! (After I manually started gpsd). So I rebooted StellarMate and it didnt work . So I returned the SD card with StellarMate 1.3 and tried again and it still didnt work. So I thought maybe it needs Kstars to set it up so I ran Kstars/Ekos and it connected but no data like before.

So I checked the /etc/default/gpsd file and it did not list a device so I entered /dev/gps and rebooted and it still doesn't work. No data. Seemingly dead.

EDIT: Sorry wrong thread

got this and its working now: www.amazon.com/GlobalSat-BU-353-S4-USB-R...-Black/dp/B008200LHW

@petarm
I've lying around the exact GPS-dongle, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be straight plug-n-play with my RasPi running the StellarmateOS-package (Ubuntu 16.04).

Did you install any driver or had to change anything else?
In Kstars/INDI I'm using the GPSD-driver and even if the drive is connected and the dongle is blinking green (or does this mean that is hasn't achieved a GPS-fix???) I don't get time and positioning.

Unfortunately the documentation is extensive or very sparse...

Cheers Chris

In the settings make sure time/location updated are set to take it from GPS as shown in the video.

@kooko_gr
I think you mix up the system time of your RPi and the time in KStars...

The GPS dongle doesn't update your system time automatically

Do you have the GPS I mentioned. It has 4800 baud rate. Did you try this:

So you need to edit /etc/rc.local and then add this before the line that says exist 0
sudoedit /etc/rc.local
then add this
stty -F /dev/gps 4800
Of course, assuming you used the port mapper to map the GPS.

(use the latest StellarMate OS 1.3)
