Having just sorted my driver issues my SD card died out in the back garden :(

Has anyone tried to boot with USB/SSD with Stellarmate like this guy?

Might be a bit much to ask but just wanted to see if anyone did!

Thanks

You still need an SD card to boot the Pi4 from an SSD. But yes, it can be done and works fine.

Can it run off a USB3 32Gig Pen drive/stick?
Do I just follow that persons guide?

Many thanks

I don't know for sure, but it is easy enough to try out. In principle it should work from a USB stick. However, they tend to be slower than an SSD, so I would go with a SanDisk SSD. That one works for me.
Doug Summers may have more to say about that, he is also using an SSD to boot from.

I can't say much about running from a USB stick (haven't tried it). I thought about it, but I'm glad I have the SSD config; it's PEPPY! In my case, the USB stick would need to come out of the powered USB hub, and it would stick out like a sore thumb. I definitely wouldn't consider putting it into the PI4 USB ports (want nothing there but the hub data cable). I can use either ethernet or a USB extender cable to transfer images from SSD back to the post-processing PC when desired. Both options work well. From an aesthetic perspective, the SSD sits nicely under the Pi4 (almost the same LxW, but only 1/3" thick), so essentially it's hidden.

use sudo for that command. This is true for most commands where you'll get permission errors. Just be knowledgeable about what you're doing when you use that command, and be careful. Once you're at sudo (root user) level, you can really mess up your config!

Thanks for the help I'm just a little confused..
I followed the article
Disk /dev/sda is my disk
and the article said to
root=/dev/sda2 rootfstype=ext4 rootwait
in cmd.txt - is this correct to type it "sda2" even though my disk is "sda"?

Then when I reboot and "df -h" it says I have 28 gig freespace which the article says I need to free up space....
Do I need to check which disk I've booted off or something?

Thanks for this help[ I really appreciate it.

I haven't tried to use the directions you've used (although they probably work....). I followed a slightly longer instruction set, but that works for me every time. If you're confused, here's another instruction set to follow/compare:
jamesachambers.com/raspberry-pi-4-usb-bo...for-ssd-flash-drives
Start at the paragraph "USB BOOT INSTRUCTIONS".
Regardless of which instruction set you use, when all is said and done, you need to have your /boot partition referencing the SD card, and root "/" on the USB drive. The names of devices can differ slightly, so adjust accordingly, but keep in mind that the endgame is /boot on SD and / on USB.
Good luck, Doug

Doug,
Have you been able to get Ubuntu 20.04 boot from an SSD using that method?
I have not managed to. I get the server booting up from the SSD , but I can never get to a Desktop. It seems that with Ubuntu 20.04 there are a number of files that cannot be read on the SSD, although the server boots from there after a loooong delay.

Installing Ubuntu 20.04 on the SSD using Berryboot worked nicely, though.

No, I haven't tried 20.04 yet.....too many irons in the fire! I am still running SM OS 1.5.2 on Raspian. That works fine for SD + SSD.
