RTC module - want to get a good one

I've been using this one www.amazon.com/HiLetgo-DS3231-Precision-...dExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

I've had one in my pi4 since I got it last June so almost a year now. I don't use my Stellarmate OS that much lately but a few days ago I burned v1.57 to an SD card and it picks up the clock fine. No configuration needed.

Hi Max,

My raspberry pi's all have a DS3231 RTC module which works very well. It loses up to a few seconds over the course of a few weeks. More than the makers of the module advertise but still well acceptable enough. It neatly fits in the RPi cases I use such that the fans of the cases can also draw power from the GPIO pins.

Use this one
www.makerfabs.com/raspberry-pi-rtc-expansion-module.html
Battery is not rechargeable but in theory it goes up to 10 years...
My guess is that it would live for 3-4 years which is good enough..

Have been using these for several months now, one of the Pis being used as a replacement. After 2 months without pluggin it, the clock is still accurate time and date...
Just a few seconds drift.

Use :
modprobe rtc-ds3232
echo ds3232 0x68 > /sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-1/new_device

Thank you guys for your input!

I looked more closely at my RTC situation.
I am pretty sure it worked correctly a while ago.
Now after some update/upgrade it doesn't (but I fixed it).

I had an impression that it kept the time at least for a few hours.
No it didn't.

So, I followed RTC install instructions found on the web.
/boot/config.txt was already edited rightly
but fake-hwclock was still active and interfering with RTC.
I disabled/removed fake-hwclock and BOOM - now RTC works as intended!

Problem solved.

EDIT: no the problem was not solved

Thanks!

Sorry. I was beating a dead horse. Two horses, actually, as I had two of those modules.
The battery in one of them was completely dead (after two years didn't hold the charge at all) and almost dead in the other one (after a year held the charge for only about an hour).
Ordering new ones - one of the sets suggested here.

For my case the one with the superconductor was not really good. The battery may only last for a few days. So i switch to the one using the CR battery

Hello everyone,

I have a quick question about the RTC with RPi (4). I got one some time ago and turned it back as it used the same pins for the fan, and I didn't know how to overcome this issue.

Does anyone have a way to use the RTC with RPi without losing the fan?

TIA

Did you check the one suggested earlier - there's a 5v and 3.3v feed from the RTC which you can connect to the fan. But I don't think it's PWM controlled ....

I typically connect the fan to a 3.3V pin and there are two of those so the RTC can use the other one.

This is also how I connect both. You have additional ground and 3.3V pins close to the site of the RTC.
The fan works well a 3.3v. At 5V can be a bit noisy depending on the specific fan.

@sywong2000
Yes, I've looked into this one. Thank you

@Wouter & Jabian
I didn't know that the fan can use 3.3v to run. I can definitely use it.

Thank you everyone for your help...
