You have done a lot of investigation including using the cables on a NINA Astro, which I'm assuming was on a x86_64 device running Windows. The fact you're saying even INDI drivers from 18 months ago aren't working but you had this working 6 month sounds like a RPi hardware issue. Just because Linux can see the cable, doesn't mean it can talk to it. If you can afford it, get another RPi and try your SD card in that, even if this doesn't solve your issue you will have a backup RPi in case the other dies when you least expect it; I lost a few nights of observing as I had a RPi die on me and I didn't have a backup. I know I had issues with my EQ6 connecting when I put the cable into a USB3 port, and I was tearing my hair out trying to work it out.

Here are some other things I would try to rule out:
* use different USB ports and see if they give different results (if the EQ8 is like the EQ6 then you should be using USB2).
* if you're using a USB hub, even a Pegasus Astro, ditch the hub and plug directly into the RPi and only in the USB2 ports
Plugging a USB2 device into a USB3 bus will still have Linux show that the device is on the USB2 bus, this is how you can plug a USB3 hub in with USB2 ports and the devices show up in lsusb has being on the USB2 bus.

Do you have any other USB2 only devices you could test? For me my only other one is my GPS dongle, all the reset use USB3.

Do we have somewhere an excerpt of the "dmesg" command showing which driver the kernel loads when plugging the cable in? Could we have the output of "lsusb - v" to clarify which port is which device (although there is not much doubt here).

@Eric
this is the port it’s trying to connect to which is correct…the EQMOD mount is online when I first start ekos and INdI, but when it does not connect, it goes offline, (shown below, screen grab of tty time out error) .it’s the FTDI  id on  ttyUSB0 port, the other was the Pegasus hub which I have since disconnected, that works fine… and the mount is now the only device I have plugged in

the cables and the mount are good, the only thing I have not changed is the RPI, have also used six different versions of Stellarmate, Astroberry and just plain raspbian, goimg back 18 months and will not work with any of them, BUT my Bluetooth EQMOD adapter works fine in latest of them all….

One thing I forgot to mention, in case it helps, six months ago when this cable used to work fine with INdI, I used to have it connected to the Pegasus USB hub, and NOT direct into the RPI, this worked fine without issue, so I have also tried that again this time, but still the same issue, will not connect, so not sure if that rules out the RPI as the issue or not…i have since removed the hub so just have the mount connected for testing purposes…

Here Is latest DMSEG,  I have the Pegasus hub attached here too, and the EQMOD cable is plugged into the Pegasus hub, this is how it worked fine before, and it does not work when plugged directly to RPI, so worth goi g back to this way as the USB ports have more power on the hub.

So we agree that "/dev/serial/by-id/usb-FTDI_FT232R_USB_UART_AM00M7QG-if00-port0" is the right serial port for the mount, that's one thing.

We saw that there is no reply on the serial port, be it from a serial terminal or the INDI driver.

You mentioned that ASCOM was successful in its connection and usage of the mount (with your Windows laptop?). You mentioned that using Bluetooth was successful too (with your raspberry?).

When you connect the mount to Windows, could you screenshot the serial port system settings parameters (the one from the device manager)?

When you connect the mount to your raspberry, could you execute "stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 -a" and report the results?

@Eric

i certainly will, but will be in a week when back from holiday, I go tomorrow for seven days….
And thanks for the continued help…much appreciated, and I really need to get to the bottom of this

It works perfectly in windows with Ascom and NINA, so I know the mount and cable are good, but the real strange one is tnat the BT adapter works perfectly with INdI…which also probes the mount is good….

Yeah your problem is the serial communication. "stty" will validate the port configuration is correct compared to Windows. What can happen is that the USB port has an incorrect voltage because of a ground problem somewhere between the Pi and the mount.

So that would mean an issue with either the cable or the PI USB port, but both of those have been ruled out, the cable is fine on windows, and the cable on INdI, has been used in the Pegasus hub and not direct in the RPI and the problem is still there.. so…or have I got that all wrong….maybe,,

oh, and I have measured the voltage when connected to the rpi on the RX and TX lines of the cable and they are correct approx 4.9v on both…as this is a 5v TTL cable as the EQ8 mount is both 3.3v and 5v tolerant….
