We are deeply saddened by the passing of Elwood C. Downey, a distinguished software engineer who started the INDI protocol and contributed to its early development. Elwood passed away unexpectedly on January 29, 2026, at the age of 70.
During its formative years, he helped shape the protocol and its surrounding tools, supporting its growth and use within the astronomy community. His work reflected a practical and thoughtful approach to software development, and it remains part of the project’s foundation.
We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
